At Buildacampervan we love nothing more than knowing whenever we want to (within reason) we can jump into one our van conversions and get away from it all. We can visit a campsite for a weekend, week or however long we are lucky enough to have off of work.
Two Channel 4 shows have recently documented just how many people are seeing the importance of having a sanctuary where they can escape the toils of modern life and get away to recharge the batteries.
The Grand Designs presenter last year went on a quest to build Kevin McCloud’s Man Made Home. The presenter with the help of boat builder Will Tricket and a few other specialists, set the task of building an off-grid cabin in the woods. He used a variety of interesting techniques and had a vision of using recycled materials wherever he could.
George Clark an architect, lecturer and Channel 4 presenter embarked on his own project to modernise a 1970’s static caravan for him and his family to enjoy and bring back many a childhood memory. The transformation of the caravan throughout the series was quite amazing with many unique design ideas making full use of the relatively small space.
The architect also showed off many other great projects in his George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces programme. Throughout the series we where shown others had their own visions of finding that perfect retreat or unique small dwelling. Shipping containers houses, a beach hut and a bus conversion for a holiday let all featured. There is another series in production which we look forward to very much.
In a new series Kevin McCloud has set off to take his cabin to a new location for the summer. He has come out of the woods and transported his cabin to the beautiful Somerset coast. His first task was to build a new deck and sea viewing platform with reclaimed parts from the rib of a capsized boat.
It may be a bit too much of an undertaking for some to create their own small space for that impromptu getaway. However, at BACV some of us started by simply throwing a sleeping bag into a van and going on an adventure.
